The Jana Sena Party (JSP) MLC Konidela Nagababu on Friday assumed charge as chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Green Executive Committee and said the State would work towards increasing its overall green cover to 50% of its geographical area by 2047.
After assuming charge at Aranya Bhavan in Mangalagiri, Mr. Nagababu said the present forest cover in Andhra Pradesh stood at 22.96% and stressed the need to expand both forest and tree cover to achieve the 50% target. He said the initiative would not be confined to forests and that efforts would be made to increase green cover on agricultural lands, in villages and urban areas, along roads and canal bunds, on government and private institutional premises, in industrial areas and on suitable wastelands. Large-scale plantations and development of gardens would also be encouraged.
