MUTA slams higher education funding drop and massive pension cuts
The MUTA teachers' association has criticized the Tamil Nadu government for reducing higher education funding and cutting retiree benefits. While they support infrastructure projects like digital libraries, they warn that budget cuts threaten academic standards and institutional growth.
Why it matters
Budgetary constraints in higher education can have long-term impacts on the quality of instruction and the financial stability of state-run universities.
The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa, Alagappa, Tamil Nadu Teachers Education and Anna University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) strongly criticised the reduction in higher education allocations and major cuts to retiree benefits.
In a formal statement, MUTA welcomed several key infrastructure and welfare announcements tailored for the student community, including the establishment of air-conditioned digital libraries across the State, the construction of 200 integrated student hostels equipped with modern amenities, the formation of a specialised government body named the Tamil Nadu Student Hostels and Infrastructure Corporation, and the continuation of the student laptop distribution initiative.
A.T. Senthamarai Kannan, general secretary, MUTA, expressed strong support for the Tamil Nadu government’s firm stance against the NEET exam, endorsing the renewed push to base medical admissions strictly on Class 12 public examination marks.
He said they raised serious concerns regarding the fiscal downsizing of the sector.
