Museveni pledges free medical support, geriatrician for older persons

President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to recruit a geriatrician for every district in Uganda to provide free medical support for the elderly. He also announced plans to tailor the Parish Development Model to help older citizens build and maintain wealth.
Why it matters
This represents a significant policy shift toward addressing the specific healthcare and economic needs of an aging population in a developing nation.
President Yoweri Museveni has noted that the government should sponsor and recruit a geriatrician in each district to offer free and consistent medical support to the elderly, a move aimed at solving the problem of medical conditions and expenses, which he said is another issue facing older people. ‘’Another issue facing older people is that they are most affected by medical conditions and expenses. It is, therefore, my view that the government should sponsor and recruit a geriatrician in each district to offer free and consistent medical support to the elderly,’’ Mr Museveni said on Thursday. A geriatrician is something more than a physician who simply cares for old people.
