Mumps cases reported in parts of Keralam’s Thrissur; DMO urges public to stay vigilant

With cases of mumps being reported from various parts of Thrissur district in Keralam, the District Medical Officer (DMO) has urged the public to remain vigilant.

Mumps is a viral infection that spreads through air, particularly through droplets from coughing and sneezing, nasal secretions and close contact with infected persons. The disease is most contagious from about two days before the onset of swelling to four to six days after the swelling appears.

Children between five and 15 years are commonly affected, although adults can also contract the infection. The disease can be more severe in adults.

The most prominent symptom is swelling on the sides of the cheeks, below the ears. The swelling may affect one or both sides of the face. Mild fever and headache are among the early symptoms, followed by difficulty in opening the mouth, chewing and swallowing. Loss of appetite and fatigue may also occur.
