Mumbai-based activist and ASIF delegation allege detention by State police

Activists and student groups have alleged that police in Mumbai and on a train to Delhi are detaining them to prevent participation in an upcoming protest. The protest aims to challenge electoral roll revisions and the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Why it matters
The allegations raise significant concerns regarding civil liberties, freedom of movement, and the right to protest in a democratic society.
Just ahead of the collective protest called by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and left groups on October 10, 2026, seeking the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Mumbai-based activist on Thursday (October 8, 2026) alleged that Mumbai Police detained and released them on the condition to stay in Mumbai.
Similar allegations have been made by All India Students’ Federation (AISF) members on police for attempting to arbitrarily detain a student delegation travelling aboard the 12779 Goa Express from Pune to New Delhi.
“Mumbai Police illegally detained activists Feroze Mithiborwala and Salim Saboowala around 11 a.m., after putting media pressure they were released on the condition to stay in Mumbai,” said Guddi. L, political activist and convenor of Hum Bharat Ke Log, a civil society group led by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.
