MUFA demands implementation of HoD rotation norms

The Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association is pushing for the implementation of a rotational system for Heads of Departments. They argue that the current long-term retention of HODs leads to administrative stagnation and bias.
Why it matters
Institutional governance and the prevention of power monopolies are critical for academic transparency and faculty morale.
Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) has renewed its demand for the immediate enforcement of the Tamil Nadu government order mandating a rotational system for Heads of Departments (HoDs).
In its letter to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education P. Ponniah the forum has stated that while other prominent State institutions, including the University of Madras, Bharathidasan University, Bharathiar University, and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, have successfully adopted the three-year tenure policy to ensure equitable leadership opportunities, MKU remains a notable holdout.
According to MUFA, the prolonged retention of certain individuals as HODs for up to 15 years, despite faculty members being recruited on the same day and year, has fostered an administrative stagnation, bias, and a lack of transparency.
The association highlighted that this practice routinely denies junior professors their rightful opportunities, creating an environment susceptible to personal vendettas and partisan decision-making.
