Mpox cases in South Africa have risen to 26, with the Western Cape identified as the most affected region. Health officials are urging the public to seek medical attention if exposed and to isolate if testing positive.
Why it matters
Public health awareness is critical to containing the spread of infectious diseases like Mpox.
Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a rare infectious viral disease. It belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox and can spread through close physical contact with an infected person.
It can also spread through contaminated items such as bedding, clothing and towels.
Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and a rash or painful skin lesions.
Mohale urged anyone who had been in close contact with a confirmed case to visit their nearest healthcare facility, even if they were feeling OK.
"Don't waste time. Present yourself to the nearest health care facility."
