Morning Digest: Supreme Court to hear Rahul, Opposition leaders’ plea against CEC, SIR today; Marco Rubio to skip Delhi, visit Mumbai and Jamnagar next week, and more

The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition from Opposition leaders regarding the deletion of 13 crore voters during a special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India, focusing on energy and trade while bypassing Delhi.
Why it matters
The legal challenge to electoral roll revisions touches on the integrity of democratic processes, while the high-level U.S. diplomatic visit signals shifting priorities in bilateral trade and energy cooperation.
The Supreme Court on Thursday (October 15, 2026) is scheduled to hear a joint petition filed by Opposition leaders led by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, seeking a full and complete disclosure of “files, agendas, minutes, notings and objections” recorded by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi on the special intensive revision (SIR), which has so far deleted about 13 crore voters across India.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to India for his second visit in six months, with energy and trade relations on the top of the agenda as he visits Mumbai and Jamnagar, the U.S. Department of State announced on Wednesday (October 14, 2026). However, Mr. Rubio, who is expected to visit India from October 19 to 22 after travelling to Samarkand in Uzbekistan for a regional conference, will skip Delhi.
