More than 5,500 people to become Irish citizens

More than 5,600 people will be conferred with Irish citizenship at ceremonies in Dublin over the next two days.

It comes as the rules around getting citizenship are set to be tightened under new legislation brought to the Cabinet by Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan.

Speaking ahead of this morning's ceremony, Minister of State with responsibility for Migration Colm Brophy said the new legislation contained in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Amendment Bill 2026 should be enacted by the end of this year.

He said it was important to remember that this was "a wonderful day for people to have the opportunity to become and a privilege to become an Irish citizen. And I think today you'll see that reflected in the numbers that are here and the enjoyment which they and their families will have in becoming citizens".
