More greenery retained at Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks
Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB) has revised development plans for Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks to preserve more greenery. The changes will result in 1,200 fewer homes being built to accommodate environmental concerns and public feedback.
Why it matters
This reflects the ongoing tension between urban development needs and environmental conservation in land-scarce nations like Singapore.
For the 23ha Maju Forest, about 10ha of greenery will be retained, up from 8ha under plans unveiled by the HDB in July.
Listen 中文 SINGAPORE – More greenery will be retained in Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks under revised development plans that involve building a combined 11,000 homes at the two sites over the next decade.
The expanded green spaces mean the Housing Board will build about 1,200 fewer homes than initially planned – an estimated 400 less in Maju Forest and 800 less in Gillman Barracks.
Announcing the revised plans on Oct 28, HDB said it took into account earlier studies for both sites, public feedback and broader planning considerations such as housing needs and the availability of alternative sites.
