And in 2016, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor - the nation's highest civilian honour - by Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House.

"To say Hamilton was a pioneer - to say she was ahead of her time - would be a dramatic understatement," MIT said in its statement announcing Hamilton's passing, before acknowledging that she was a software engineer before it was mainstream.
