Ōmokoroa SH2 roundabout opens as interim step towards future interchange
A new $43 million roundabout has opened at the Ōmokoroa intersection on State Highway 2 in New Zealand. The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow as an interim measure before a larger interchange is constructed.

Ōmokoroa’s $43 million new gateway to State Highway 2 has officially opened.
The ribbon-cutting on Friday marked the completion of a transport upgrade designed to improve safety and support the Western Bay of Plenty town’s rapid growth.
The SH2/Ōmokoroa Rd intersection upgrade and Stage 1 of the Ōmokoroa Rd urbanisation project included a new roundabout at SH2, four-laning into Ōmokoroa, and upgrades between SH2 and Prole Rd.
The new roundabout was operational by April, although a temporary 60km/h speed limit remained while the final skid-resistant surface was completed.
The wider project was funded by $38m from the Crown’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund and $5m from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), plus about $1.49m worth of NZTA land.
