Mizoram aims to be first state to complete Census 2027

Mizoram is preparing to be the first Indian state to complete the 2027 Census, with officials emphasizing data accuracy for future policymaking. The exercise will include refugees and those excluded from recent electoral roll revisions.
Why it matters
The census is a critical administrative tool for resource allocation and policy planning, and its implementation in border states like Mizoram has significant social implications.
Mizoram aims to become the first state to complete Census 2027 , with the State government stepping up preparations for the population enumeration exercise, officials said on Saturday (October 10, 2026).
Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired a State-level conference here to review preparations for the second phase of the census, including training and field arrangements.
Mr. Meena stressed the need to ensure accuracy and thoroughness, noting that census data would play a crucial role in policymaking and in achieving the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
He said the second phase would require greater effort than the first and urged officials to work with dedication to ensure its timely completion.
He also called on them to make Mizoram the first state to complete the exercise, a target the state had set during the first phase as well.
