Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed Advisor to the West Bengal Government. He will hold the rank of a Cabinet Minister for Information and Culture. The announcement was made during a foundation stone ceremony for the ‘Uttam Kumar Film Centre’ in New Town on September 5, 2026.
The appointment was notified on Wednesday (October 7, 2026) by the Department of Personnel and Administrative reforms.
Mr. Chakraborty, a popular movie star who enjoyed great success in Bengali cinema and Bollywood, first dabbled with the Left Front and was seen as ideologically aligned with its politics.
In April 2014, after the Left Front was voted out of power, he was nominated by the Trinamool Congress to the Rajya Sabha. He resigned in 2016, citing health reasons.
