Citing data from the National Centre for Seismology, the Regional Meteorological Centre said the earthquake originated at a depth of 10 km, with its epicentre located in the Denkanikottai-Hosur region of Krishnagiri district, near the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border.
Officials noted that a seismic event of such magnitude is classified as a minor earthquake and may be felt by people in areas close to the epicentre, including in and around Krishnagiri, Hosur and adjoining areas of Karnataka.
