Why it matters
Modernizing public transportation infrastructure is critical for urban development and improving safety standards for daily commuters.
Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban on Friday inaugurated the services of 28 new BS6 buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Salem division, replacing the old buses.
The buses were flagged off at the Salem Old Bus Stand in the presence of District Collector K. Elambahavath. The Minister said the State government was extending bus routes and introducing new services to ensure that villages remained connected, and to meet the daily transport needs of students, women, workers and the public.
The new buses have air suspension systems for a comfortable journey and are equipped with reverse cameras and Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD), an advanced GPS-based system to track their location. Safety features have also been incorporated to ensure that the buses can operate only when the doors are closed, he said.
