Why it matters
The public friction between a high-profile manager and his captain highlights internal instability at a major global football club.
Michael Carrick has insisted that Bruno Fernandes has been dropped for "pure football" reasons, despite the captain publicly criticising the Manchester United manager earlier this week.
Fernandes has been left out of Man Utd's starting line-up against Bournemouth days after his questioned United's tactics for Wednesday's 4-1 defeat by Como, which was Man Utd's seventh consecutive game without a win. Fernandes told TNT Sports after the Como defeat that it was "a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man".
