Metadata-handling 'studio companion' wins OpenPlay's CoLab hackathon

A project called 'Sesh' won OpenPlay's CoLab hackathon for its ability to automatically capture music metadata during songwriting sessions. The AI-powered tool aims to solve the industry-wide problem of inaccurate royalty payments by recording credits and splits in the background.
Why it matters
Automating metadata collection addresses a major pain point in the music industry, potentially ensuring more accurate and timely compensation for creators.
Inaccurate metadata is the scourge of the music industry, certainly in terms of getting the right people paid fairly for their work. One obvious solution is starting to collect that metadata as early as possible in the music-making process: at the songwriting and recording stage. But as many musicians will tell you, when they re in their most creative moments, stopping to note down contributors and splits isn t always a priority. The winning project at music-tech firm OpenPlay s recent CoLab hackathon sought to address this. Built by Jake Handy, who placed third in the same event last year , it was called Sesh. Not to be confused with the superfans-focused startup of the same name .
