Why it matters
This release demonstrates the push by major tech firms to integrate generative AI directly into desktop workflows, enhancing productivity for professional users.
Meta wants its AI assistant closer to where people work.
The company has launched a dedicated Meta AI app for Mac with window sharing, system-wide dictation, and quick keyboard access. Meta is also expanding the assistant’s connections to Facebook, Instagram, advertising campaigns, and Google Workspace.
For Mac users, the release provides a faster way to ask questions and generate content based on information already visible on the screen. However, Meta AI cannot directly control the computer like some competing AI tools.
The version 1.0 beta is a 16MB application designed for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later, according to 9to5Mac .
Users can press Option-Space to display a compact Meta AI composer over another application. The app can also remain hidden from the Dock, making the keyboard shortcut its primary access point.
