German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced military aid for Ukraine worth around €1 billion and an energy support package during a visit to Kyiv, as the Ukrainian capital came under renewed attack from Russian drones.
Mr Merz, who was accompanied by a senior minister and several company executives, said his visit "demonstrates that we will not be intimidated. Nor will we be intimidated by a drone attack occurring at the very time of our visit."
A bridge in Kyiv was hit in a Russian attack on the city, mayor Vitali Klitschko said, soon after the arrival of the chancellor this morning.
"Impact on the road surface of the Northern Bridge. Emergency services are heading to the scene," the mayor wrote on Telegram. Air raid sirens had earlier blared, warning of drones approaching the city.
