KUALA LUMPUR: Former world squash champion Nicol Ann David and the Mercy Malaysia organisation were among eight recipients of the 2026 Merdeka Award, recognising their outstanding contributions to the nation.

Nicol received the award for her contributions to humanities, arts and sports, while Mercy Malaysia for outstanding contribution to education and community.

Other recipients were national linguistic icon Asmah Omar (scholastic and academic achievement); turtle conservationist Chan Eng Heng (environment and planetary health); and two-time Paralympic gold medallist and badminton player Cheah Liek Hou (Merdeka Award for Hope).
