Why it matters
This event highlights the intersection of corporate branding and national tourism promotion, alongside significant regional efforts to modernize border logistics and air travel in Southern Africa.
Zambia is hosting a 17-member Mercedes-Benz delegation as part of the brand's "140 Years, 140 Places" World Tour, a global expedition commemorating 140 years since Karl Benz patented the automobile in 1886. The delegation, led by Christian David Schmidt and comprising 14 German nationals, two South Africans and one Austrian, entered Zambia through the Nakonde Border Post on 18 August from Tanzania and is scheduled to depart on 22 August via the Victoria Falls Border into Zimbabwe. The convoy is travelling across six continents, more than 55 countries and 140 destinations as part of the worldwide tour.
