Mela Annathope residents complain of gutter flowing on to streets for five days
Residents of Mela Annathope in Madurai protested after a blocked manhole caused sewage to overflow onto streets for five days. The issue was resolved after police intervention, though officials cited improper waste disposal by residents as a contributing factor.

The residents of Mela Annathope in HMS Colony here in Ward 55 got a relief at last from the gutter odour which was in the air thickly for the last four days giving sleepless nights to the residents.
The civic body despatched its men and material on Tuesday, when womenfolk from the colony came to the roads demanding relief and attention of the authorities.
As the roads got blocked and traffic came to a standstill in the vicinity, the police took up the matter with the Corporation authorities. Immediately, they swung into action and cleared the block in the manhole. In about three hours, the gutter flowing on the roads was arrested.
The residents said that since Friday, the manholes in the area were overflowing. Many houses, which were lowlying got inundated with the gutter. Children could not eat food as the air was thickly choked with the unpleasant smell.
