Returning to college after more than a decade away can be daunting enough. For Franz Lozano Jr., it became the beginning of an unexpected leadership journey. A biomedical equipment technology student at San Jacinto College, Lozano returned to education after serving in the U.S. Army and working in industrial fields. He eventually reconnected with learning while also helping shape conversations around education and the people who make it possible. According to a news report by the San Jacinto College, Lozano's path into advocacy began almost by accident. Encouraged by a friend, Lozano joined the Texas State Teachers Association of Aspiring Educators, despite not studying to become a teacher. What started as an extracurricular commitment soon became a space where he could develop his leadership skills, meet fellow students and find new ways to serve his community.
