Meet Avtar Nanrey, Indian-origin shooter who won two Canadian national rifle titles

Avtar Nanrey’s journey to the top of Canadian rifle shooting began far from the ranges where he now competes. He first discovered the sport through the Army Cadets in India, winning a cadet championship in his first competition, then stepped away for more than a decade before returning to competitive shooting in Canada. In 2026, the Brampton, Ontario, marksman produced the biggest result of his career at the 142nd Canadian Fullbore National Championship. He won both the Governor General’s Prize and the Canadian Gold Cross Grand Aggregate, becoming only the second Canadian to claim both major titles at the same national championship.
