Matatu driver accused of killing five while doing "manyoka" stunts arrested

The driver of a matatu that overturned and killed five passengers along Enterprise Road in Nairobi has been arrested in Malindi after two months on the run.

Police said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday ahead of his planned arraignment today.

The suspect is linked to the deadly D’etat matatu crash that occurred on June 3, 2026, near the Dar es Salaam Roundabout, opposite KCB Bank in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.

The crash, which happened at about 8pm, left five people dead and dozens injured after the matatu overturned.

Eyewitnesses and video footage reportedly showed the vehicle being driven erratically, including alleged “Manyoka” stunts, before the crash.

Among matatu enthusiasts, “Manyoka” refers to a style of driving characterised by sharp swerves, sudden manoeuvres, high speeds and elaborate stunts intended to thrill passengers and draw public attention.
