Why it matters
Early detection of vision problems in children is essential for academic performance and long-term health, particularly in underserved school populations.
To mark World Sight Day 2026, Sankara Nethralaya, the Elite School of Optometry, and The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, Chennai, conducted a single day mass vision screening on October 7.
It reached 13 government schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur, and screened 6,348 children for eye problems. A total of 622 children were identified with refractive errors, and 73 were referred for further care.
The screenings were carried out by 11 teams of optometrists, optometry students, and support staff, who also raised awareness about myopia.
