Why it matters
Large-scale private philanthropy plays a significant role in funding major healthcare infrastructure and expanding medical capacity for vulnerable populations.
In 2010, Salesforce co-founder and CEO Marc Benioff and his wife, Lynne Benioff, donated $100 million to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to help fund the construction of a new children's hospital, a project that would later become one of the most significant healthcare developments in the San Francisco Bay Area. Announced in June 2010, the donation was described as the largest gift ever made mainly to the UCSF Children's Hospital. Also, it is one of the largest private donations made to a children’s hospital in the United States at that time. As part of the recognition and gratitude towards the contribution, the facility also renamed the facility as UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. As per UCSF, the gift made by Benioff supported the development of a new children’s hospital at the Mission Bay campus in San Francisco.
