Man who stabbed 2 near New York’s Central Park yelled ‘Allahu Akbar,’ police say - NBC News

A man accused of stabbing a Jewish man and an Asian man in attacks on Manhattan’s Upper West Side was charged with hate crime counts Friday, officials said. Witnesses reported that the suspect, Raul Morales, 51, yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks Thursday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has said. Morales was arraigned late Friday on two counts of second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime; and one count each of first-degree assault as a hate crime, second-degree assault as a hate crime, and attempted first-degree assault as a hate crime, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said. A judge ordered Morales, 51, remanded without bail, the office said. The stabbings happened a few blocks apart on the Upper West Side near Central Park, beginning at around 1:31 p.m., officials said.
