Man who died near Notting Hill Carnival is named

Image source, Getty Images Published 4 September 2026 A man who died after jumping into a canal while fleeing from police near Notting Hill Carnival has been named.

Karnell Kelly, 25, died in hospital after entering the Grand Union Canal off Kensal Road, west London, while being pursued by police officers.

He had fled on foot after the officers attempted to stop him near Harrow Road as he approached the carnival wearing a face covering at about 15:20 BST on Monday, the Metropolitan Police said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating, said it was reviewing body-worn video from officers who had chased Kelly down Hormead Road.

Officers and members of the public entered the canal to pull him from the water and he was rushed to a central London hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 16:40.
