In a scene that left the police in a tizzy, a 28-year-old person allegedly stole a police patrol vehicle from the rural police station premises in Karimnagar on Monday night.
He later tried to extort money from truck drivers by impersonating a police officer before being apprehended near Hasanparthi in Hanamkonda district in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to sources, the accused was identified as Mohd. Ajaz, an AC mechanic of Bommakal near Karimnagar.
He allegedly took advantage of the vehicle keys being left in the ignition inside the driver’s cabin and drove away with the parked vehicle.
He reportedly headed towards Hanamkonda and hit a road divider near Hasanpathy, bringing the vehicle to a halt.
He then allegedly parked the vehicle on the roadside and tried to extort money from truck drivers by posing as a police officer.
