Why it matters
Human-wildlife conflict remains a significant safety and conservation challenge in forest-adjacent regions of India.
A 70-year-old man was killed in a wild elephant attack at Kariysholai in the Bitherkad forest range in Gudalur on Saturday morning.
Forest officials identified the deceased as M. Balasubramaniam, who worked at a private coffee estate in the area. At the time of the incident, there was thick fog, which limited visibility and contributed to the negative human-elephant interaction, officials said.
