Man killed after compressor-tractor falls into quarry pit

A man died after the compressor-tractor he was operating to break stones at a laterite quarry at Vettilappara near Areekode fell into a deep water-filled pit on Saturday (September 5, 2026).
The deceased was identified as Unais from Makkaraparamba near Malappuram.
The accident occurred around 11 a.m. when Unais reportedly lost control of the machine while manoeuvring it, causing the tractor to overturn and plunge into the quarry’s water-filled pit. He was believed to have been trapped inside the machine.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel, assisted by a scuba diving team, conducted an extensive search in the more than 20-foot-deep water before recovering his body.
