Man jailed for life for murder of Waterford woman in 2025

Marcus O'Neill has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2025 murder of Gillian Curran in Waterford. The trial was notable for being the first in Ireland to use garda body-worn camera footage as evidence.
Why it matters
Sets a legal precedent for the use of police body-cam evidence in Irish criminal trials and addresses domestic violence issues.
The family of Waterford woman Gillian Curran have said that the sentencing of her killer is a step towards justice, but they want to make sure the voices of all victims of domestic abuse are heard and that no one is forgotten.
The Curran family made the comments outside the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin after 36-year-old Marcus O'Neill was handed the mandatory life sentence for murder.
Ms Curran, who was 47 and originally from Sweetbriar in Tramore, was found unresponsive at her partner’s house on the morning of 25 January 2025 and pronounced dead a short time later.
O’Neill had denied murdering Ms Curran at his home on O'Brien Street in Waterford city.
However, in July, a jury of five men and seven women returned a majority 10-2 verdict and found him guilty of murder.
