A 38-year-old man was reportedly hacked to death near Tirunelveli town on Sunday.

He has been identified as Avudaiyappan of the Scheduked Caste community from Parayadi near Tirunelveli town. He was murdered by unidentified persons near Sudalaimadan temple near Paraiyadi on Tirunelveli-Sankarankoil road. After noticing him lying dead, passers-by alerted the Tirunelveli town police.

Initially, residents of Parayadi and Avudaiyappan’s relatives refused to allow the police to take away the body and staged a protest demanding the arrest of the accused. Police officials held talks with them and later sent the body for post-mortem examination at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital.

A case was registered at Tirunelveli town police station and further investigations are underway.
