shares Share article Police are tracing the moments during a cross-border car chase that spanned almost 100 kilometres and left the driver dead.

Nearly three hours passed between the male driver, aged 25, first being spotted on the Gold Coast before the vehicle drove down an embankment in northern NSW.

The man was first seen in possession of a gun and behind the wheel of a Ford ute at Robina at 11.42pm on Saturday.

Police attempted to detain the driver, but were unable to stop him as he headed south on the Gold Coast Highway towards the state border.

Queensland Police notified their New South Wales counterparts, who spotted the ute on Sexton Hill Drive in Banora Point.
