PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian man has been sentenced to six years in prison in Melbourne, Australia, after being convicted of enslaving an Indonesian woman and assaulting her.
Melbourne county court judge Michael Cahill imposed the sentence on Chong Chee Kit, 47, for forcing the woman into domestic servitude and assaulting her, ABC News reported.
"You treated her as a slave, that is, you used her like property you owned," the judge said, describing Chong's abuses as callous and cruel.
Chong will be eligible for parole in 2030 and is expected to be deported to Malaysia after completing his jail term.
In May, a jury found him guilty of keeping the victim, in her 60s, as a slave between February and October 2022.
