Malaria deaths at sea highlight need for early diagnosis and prevention

Twitter Email Linkedin Two seafarers have died from malaria aboard Hong Kong-registered cargo ships operating in African waters over the past two years, prompting the Hong Kong Marine Department to remind shipowners, operators and crews of the potentially fatal risks posed by the disease.

T he two cases, which occurred aboard a container ship and a bulk carrier, highlight the importance of early recognition of malaria symptoms, timely medical treatment and appropriate preventive measures when ships operate in high-risk areas.

The first case occurred in October 2024 after a container ship departed Walvis Bay, Namibia, bound for Singapore.

Two days after departure, an ordinary seaman reported feeling unwell. As his symptoms persisted, the master notified the company and sought remote medical assistance. The seafarer was given medication to treat his fever, but his condition continued to deteriorate.
