Major driver's licence change being rolled out for eligible Aussie motorists: 'Making life easier'

The Northern Territory will soon roll out a digital driver's licence system to fall in line with most of the country. (Getty/ABC) Thousands of Aussies still holding on to their physical driver's licence will soon be able to ditch it, as the entire country moves closer to a digital system.

Already, NSW , Victoria , Queensland and South Australia have been using digital licences for some time, while Western Australia is set to join the ranks soon.

Now, Territorians in the country's north will finally be able to carry their licences on their smartphone under proposed changes across the region.

The Northern Territory government recently announced the changes under the Motor Vehicles Amendment (Digital Licences) Bill 2026.

Once available later this year, the NT digital driver's licence can be used to prove a person's authority to drive, confirm they are over 18 and verify their identity in participating situations.
