Madurai Reader’s Mail

Residents of Madurai are reporting ongoing sanitation issues following a strike by municipal workers, alongside concerns regarding traffic violations and pedestrian safety. The letter urges authorities to implement night cleaning, enforce traffic laws, and improve infrastructure like speed-breakers.
Why it matters
It reflects the challenges of urban management in a historic city struggling with rapid growth and infrastructure strain.
Sanitary workers of the Madurai Municipal Corporation have withdrawn their strike. However, the woes of the residents seem not to have ended. Garbage has piled up everywhere. To add more trouble, the rainfall has soaked waste and many streets in and around Meenakshi Temple, Thirumalai Naick Palace and at Flower Market on Madurai-Melur Road.
The civic authorities should start night cleaning not only in commercial zones, but also in residential areas and clear the backlog.
Of late, not only two-wheelers violate one-way traffic system, but even four-wheelers and goods vehicles also indulge in taking short-cuts on main thoroughfares posing danger to the motorists abiding traffic rules.
