Madukkarai tahsildar rejects request for removal of pungai tree, permits pruning of branches

A local Tahsildar in Madukkarai has rejected a resident's request to remove a tree that was interfering with power lines, opting instead to permit only the pruning of branches. The decision aims to balance public safety concerns with environmental preservation.
Why it matters
This reflects the administrative challenges of managing urban infrastructure and environmental safety at the local government level.
A petition submitted by a resident of Housing Unit Phase II in Kurichi to remove a pungai tree that allegedly posed risk to electricity lines was rejected by the Madukkarai Tahsildar, who granted permission only to prune the branches.
The issue was flagged by Syed of Green Care Movement.
The order was issued by Tahsildar M. Senthilkumar on September 24, based on a petition submitted by S. Subramaniam, a resident of B-74, Housing Unit Phase II, and a report from the Kurichi Village Administrative Officer.
The VAO had reported that the branches of the tree extended over electricity lines and could pose a danger. The tree was also considered at risk of falling during heavy rain and strong winds.
