Madras High Court closes plea to register FIR in ₹4 crore cheating complaint against C. Vijayabaskar

The Madras High Court has closed a petition seeking an FIR against former minister C. Vijayabaskar regarding a ₹4 crore cheating complaint. The court found no substance in the allegations after a preliminary police inquiry revealed the complainant could not prove the source of the funds.
Why it matters
This case highlights the legal scrutiny applied to high-profile political figures and the evidentiary standards required for initiating criminal investigations in financial disputes.
The Madras High Court on October 1 closed a petition filed by Alangudi Assembly constituency AIADMK candidate Dhana Vimal who sought registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against former Minister C. Vijayabaskar (now in TVK) for having allegedly cheated him of ₹4 crore.
Justice V. Lakshminarayanan closed the plea after Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Arun Anbumani told the court that a Deputy Superintendent of Police attached to the Pudukottai district police had conducted a preliminary inquiry into the complaint but did not find any substance requiring registration of FIR.
According to the complainant, Mr. Vijayabaskar, during the latter’s stint in the AIADMK, had called him on the phone on November 11, 2025, and asked him to arrange for ₹5 crore to prove that he could meet the election expenses if he was declared party’s candidate in Alangudi constituency.
