Madlanga commission to question Cabonge after recording aired at Sibiya’s bail hearing

The Madlanga commission plans to interview Congolese socialite Serge Cabonge following his mention in a recorded phone call played during a bail hearing for former police official Shadrack Sibiya. The recording allegedly suggests Cabonge influenced a case involving a family member of a commission official.
Why it matters
This raises potential integrity concerns regarding the impartiality of a high-profile government commission in South Africa.
The Madlanga commission says it will obtain a statement from Congolese socialite Serge Cabonge after hearing voice recordings attributed to him at former deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya’s bail hearing at the Randburg magistrate’s court.
On Tuesday, during Sibiya’s bail application at the Randburg magistate’s court, Cabonge was heard on a recorded phone call saying he once helped the family of someone who “sits in the front at the Madlanga commission” when their daughter faced charges after bumping into a woman carrying a child.
