MacKenzie Scott gave $30m to housing nonprofit; a year later, it unveiled 10-year plan
Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $30 million to the Housing Trust Silicon Valley to support affordable housing initiatives in the Bay Area. This unrestricted gift is the largest individual donation in the organization's history and will fund loan programs and new equity-focused projects.
Why it matters
Large-scale philanthropic investments are essential for addressing the severe housing affordability crisis in high-cost regions like Silicon Valley.
In October 2024, Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, through her Yield Giving fund, donated $30 million to Housing Trust Silicon Valley, providing the largest individual gift in the nonprofit’s history. The unrestricted donation was aimed at helping the organisation expand affordable housing opportunities across the 14-county Bay Area, one of the most expensive housing markets in the United States. As per Housing Trust TV, announcing the gift, Noni Ramos, chief executive of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, said the funding would enable the organisation to accelerate efforts to create more equitable and affordable communities.
