Lwengo district boss closes NIRA offices over alleged extortion

Lwengo District Chairperson, Mr. Abasi Kizito, on Thursday closed the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices in the district following widespread allegations that staff are extorting money from residents seeking national identity cards.
Applicants are reportedly being forced to pay between Shs10,000 and Shs20,000 to acquire their cards, a practice that prompted local leaders to intervene.
Mr. Kizito said his office had received numerous complaints from frustrated residents accusing NIRA personnel of demanding bribes and withholding identity cards from those who refuse to pay. “We will not tolerate any conduct that undermines the rights of our people to access public services. Government offices exist to serve citizens, not exploit them. Every resident deserves fair treatment, accountability, and services delivered without unlawful demands,” Mr. Kizito said.
