Lt. Governor inaugurates aerobin facilities for waste processing at Puducherry jail
The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry inaugurated an Aerobin-based composting facility at the Central Prison in Kalapet. This initiative aims to process biodegradable waste on-site and encourages other institutions to adopt similar sustainable practices.
Why it matters
It promotes sustainable waste management and circular economy practices within government institutions.
As part of the initiatives associated with the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign in the Union Territory, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Monday inaugurated Aerobin-based on-site composting facility at the Central Prison, Kalapet in Puducherry.
The departments of local administration and prison have come together to install eight Aerobins for processing biodegradable waste generated inside the prison. Aerobin composting is a contained aerobic process in which segregated biodegradable waste undergoes natural decomposition through micro-organisms in the presence of adequate air and moisture.
Each Aerobin installed at the prison has the capacity to process 525 kg. The bins will be operated in rotation, enabling the biodegradable waste to undergo an approximately 45-day composting cycle and ensuring continuous processing of biodegradable waste throughout the year, said a LAD official.
