Low storage in Siruvani, Pilloor reservoirs challenges Coimbatore’s 24x7 water supply plan

The Coimbatore Corporation’s efforts to provide round-the-clock drinking water supply under its 24x7 water supply project continue to face a key challenge — inadequate water availability in the Siruvani and Pilloor reservoirs.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the project currently covered around 1.2 lakh of the targeted 1.5 lakh household service connections (HSCs) across 105.6 sq. km, covering 58 wards fully and two wards partially.
“The challenge in providing continuous supply is the availability of water in the reservoirs. Rainfall this year has been lower, and unless the sources have adequate storage, the project cannot ensure the quantity required for distribution,” he said.
The city requires around 330 million litres a day (MLD) to provide continuous water supply to households. “Once the required quantity is available continuously, we can distribute water to households 24x7,” Mr. Ravi Teja said.
