Low is the first leader of the biennale to hail from south-east Asia since it began in 1973, and follows 2026 artistic director, Emirati curator Hoor Al Qasimi .
Artist Abdul Abdullah says the Cronulla riots were a "moment of revelation" for many Australians as he unveils a new work for Sydney Biennale.
"I'm really looking forward to the next couple of years of trying to articulate an exhibition that makes sense for now," Low says.
