A coronial inquest into the deaths of six children in the Hillcrest Primary School tragedy has started in Devonport in Tasmania's north-west.

At the outset of the inquest, the coroner's court heard details of each of the children who died.

The inquest is expected to run for four days this week, before resuming in November and February.
