Live updates: Bitcoin whipsaws between $81,000 and $84,000 as altcoins slide

Bitcoin experienced significant volatility between $81,000 and $84,000 while altcoins faced broader declines, dragging the Crypto Fear & Greed Index down to 57. Meanwhile, broader financial markets saw chipmaker stocks struggle amid concerns over AI spending sustainability and upcoming U.S. inflation data.
Why it matters
The simultaneous cooling of crypto sentiment and chipmaker stocks highlights growing investor caution regarding high-growth assets ahead of critical U.S. economic indicators.
Altcoins didn’t bounce back as hard. ZEC was the laggard, down nearly 8% to about $1,210, and HYPE fell nearly 6% to about $82. SOL and DOGE each dropped 4%, and XRP lost about 3% to $1.36. Ether and BNB slipped between 1% and 2%, according to CoinDesk data.
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which tracks market sentiment, fell to 57. That’s still in “greed” territory, but it’s the lowest reading since Sept. 18.
